Our all-inclusive stay at the Dona Sylvia really was a great pleasure. The secure and guarded front gate opens to a large circular drive with parking, in front of the spacious main reception and lounge which has no walls to front and rear. The back of the lounge area is open to the very large primary pool. The main restaurant is appended to one side of the reception area. The rest of the complex, leading away from the pool, consists of a series of small enclaves of half a dozen bungalows and a couple of two-story villas, surrounding central a green area with colourful shrubs and massive coconut palms, giving a pleasantly jungly feel. One enclave surrounds a decent-sized secondary pool instead. These enclaves all append to a central avenue of beautifully attended gardens full of palms, which leads ultimately to the superb sandy beach. Each bungalow has two separate rooms, and the villas have four rooms. The rooms all have ensuites, and each ground floor room has its own little front garden, while the upper floors have large well-separated balconies. We found the beds very comfortable, and the rooms were well-equipped with hairdryer, iron, a kettle with tea & coffee facilities, and a safe for valuables. Happily, there is also a fridge, and constant supply of free bottled water. In fact, all of the consumables (shampoo, teabags, etc) are replenished daily, along with fresh towels, and an efficient cleaning and bed-making service. The television has a number of English language channels, and the schedule menus have selectable languages. The air-conditioning is quite powerful, and will keep you as cool as you like, although we preferred to use the overhead fan! Outside the resort's gates there is the charmingly rustic Cavelossim town. There are many shops full of clothes, and more jewellers than Hatton Garden. There are 3 pharmacies in town, where you can buy almost any medication over the counter without prescription. The pharmacists are very knowledgeable, and will usually be able to advise you if you need help. The food service in the resort's main restaurant offers so many different dishes, it becomes hard to choose. These dishes are mainly Goan or from other parts of India, although there are frequent items from Thailand, Korea and other Asian countries. Actually, guests can ask for almost any kind of meal, and the kitchen will usually manage to oblige. European-style breakfasts are served, as well as Indian idlis and curries. The restaurant staff are very efficient, helpful and friendly, despite being rushed off their feet. I must put in a special mention for Darshan, Ishmael and Abdullah, who really looked after us. Incidentally, anyone watching their weight will need to shut their eyes when passing the desserts! There are two other restaurants on the far side of the pool opposite the main building, offering different menus. These are not included in the all-inclusive deal, although on arrival, such guests are given a voucher for one free meal per person per full week of stay. However, if you want salmon or tiger prawns, there is a further surcharge... There are a number of sports and activities available, some of which are free to all, but most are chargeable. These are not included in "all-inclusive" either. The resort is beautiful, relaxed and relaxing. The jungle effect of the gardens is enhanced by the wildlife, with the early morning bird-song chorus, eventually interrupted by the squawks late-waking jackdaws, the flutter of butterflies from very tiny to quite large, the tiny squirrels, indistinguishable from American chipmunks, running over the roofs and jumping into the trees, and the gentle cicadas in the evening, very restrained compared to their European cousins. The central avenue leads to a path between two grassed areas, large enough to accommodate two cricket matches simultaneously. Just past the security-guarded end of this path is the wide, sandy beach. It is quite fun to take an electric trolley ride (like a golf cart) to the end of the residential area en route to the beach. Sunbeds and shades are available on the beach, but these do not belong to the hotel. They belong to the "beach shacks". These shacks quite substantial wooden structures on the landward edge of the beach, which serve as cafes, and the owners will bring drinks and snacks to sunbed occupants. It seems to be considered polite to purchase a drink if you use a sunbed, although there are no restrictions or time limits, and it is all very laid-back. Around 5pm the shack staff bring out tables and chairs to set up near the high-water mark, as, in the evenings, the shacks become very competent restaurants, serving decent menus at very reasonable prices. If you want fish, order at least a day in advance so that they can buy in a fresh catch for you. Remember that Goans like garlic - a lot! If you are not so keen, tell them when you arrive, as everything is cooked fresh, so they can adjust the recipe for you. Although it was generally relaxing, we had the good fortune to be present for the Holi festival day, which was anything but relaxing! On one of the big grassy areas, there was paint-throwing, water-splashing, and everyone dancing to a very lively band, accompanied by plenty of free beer. Quite a day...! However, the stars of the show are the resort's staff members. They are all so very friendly, and cannot do enough for you, as well as being very efficient at their various jobs. All the work is organized and constantly inspected by the senior management staff. I cannot praise the entire staff highly enough. On the negative side, TUI left a poor impression. Maybe I am asking a lot, but there seemed little point in giving us earphones to watch in-flight movies when they were inaudible above the engine noise. BA flights provide noise-cancelling headphones, so you don't miss anything. The in-flight food was unappetizing, to be polite, but far worse was to come. The TUI agent we booked with told us that the transfer from the airport to the hotel would take around 1hr 20mins. It actually took over 2 hrs, as it now mentions on the website. Not only that, the coach provided was dirty, and had undoubtedly passed its expiry date some decades ago. It was clear that there was some issue with the suspension, if it had any... It was the most juddering, bone-shaking, teeth-rattling 2hrs I have ever spent, other than the equally appalling 2hr return journey in the same coach. The horror of this return was compounded by my wife being bitten, in the coach, on the face and leg by some insects that were definitely more serious than mosquitos, possibly ticks. These transfers were completely unacceptable, and TUI needs to take action. Local information says that Dabolim airport is to close, and a new one will be built around 4-5 kilometres from Cavelossim. That might help, but if it is for internal flights only (like Dabolim), the 2hr hike from Manohar will still be the route. Don’t be put off by my negative comments, grit your teeth and bear the transfer pain. You will find Doña Sylvia is well worth it.

I was pleasantly surprised with this hotel, I am a seasoned traveller and am fortunate to have experiences of staying in 4 and 5 star hotels all over the world. The rooms, hotel and grounds were spotlessly clean and tidy, and everything was in working order and well maintained. The staff were extremely helpful, polite and friendly and definitely provided a good service, doing all they could to make our stay perfect. The pool area was clean and comfortable. The breakfast was lovely and plentiful. The location was excellent, just a three minute stroll to the beach where there were approximately 10 beach shacks, and just out the front of the hotel were a number of shops. On the down side I felt the room was small compared to similar hotels, (and we didnt even have a standard room) ,and the entertainment was awful, there were singers who really were not very good and it would have been better without, especially on Sunday when I had to listen to them droning on all day whilst I was at the pool area. If you want to hear some good singing there is a bar just over the road with some fantastic singers and I would encourage the hotel to perhaps poach them as the current singers at the hotel were well below par.

5*s! The most magical place to stay in South Goa - our second home x

5*s! As always, we wish to leave a glowing review for our stay at Novotel Dona Sylvia. We returned here after getting married at this very venue 5 years ago - we wished to come back to reminisce and unwind and it was the most perfect stay of our trip to India. Gita and the rest of the Novotel Staff (Anant, Anjali, Gavin to name just a few) were attentive, super lovely and made us feel as though we had returned home, which was furthered when we also met the General Manager on our last day. The team pulled out every stop and made us feel extremely welcome and at ease, especially when we landed at midnight - they did everything they could to accommodate us with checkin and a snack before sleeping. The pool, breakfast buffet food service and grounds were excellent - we cannot thank the Novotel Team enough for all their thoughtful details to celebrate our anniversary (including a cake and a personalised, heartfelt card). We thoroughly enjoyed walking through the hotel, the serenity pool and the easy access to the beach - for sure we will be back in the coming years. The team pulled out all the stops for the most memorable and unforgettable stay, we cannot thank you enough - the charm of Dona Sylvia has indeed lived on and will be with us for our whole lifetime. Special shoutout to Gita Ben - you are simply wonderful and we cannot wait to plan our return trip. If you are looking for a place to stay in South Goa, then definitely look no further! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts - Radhika and Kishan Manek xxx
